DC's Crippled Callibaetis Recipe:
Hook: Size 14 to 16 TMC 3761, 100SPBL, or TMC 9300
Thread: Tan 8/0
Wing: Natural Dun CDC puff or Hair from a Medium Dun Snowshoe Hare foot
Eyes: 30# Mason's Hard Nylon - pre-colored with a dark brown magic marker and melted with a lighter to form the eyeballs
Tail: Lemon wood duck breast feather
Body: Callibaetis Tan dry fly dubbing of choice
Back: Small Pearl UTC Mirage Tinsel
Rib: Fine gold wire
Legs: Barred hen back or partridge hackle

Step 1:

Tie a full CDC puff immediately behind the hook eye, extending forward one hook shank in length.

Step 2:

Tie an eyeball set on top of the CDC puff tie-in point, and secure with several figure-eight thread wraps.

Step 3:

Move the thread to a position just above the hook point and tie in a small clump of wood duck breast feather, slightly less than a hook shank in length, for the trailing shuck. Secure a piece of tinsel and gold wire on top of the wood duck base.

Step 4:

Dub a tapered body to just behind the eyeballs. Pull the tinsel forward and tie in. Wrap the gold wire forward and tie off. Crisscross a small amount of dubbing around the eyeballs. Let the thread hang just behind the eyes.

Step 5:

Strip the stem of a barred, brown colored hen back hackle, leaving approximately one-half-inch of the hackle tip. Clip out the center section out of the remaining hackle tip, forming a "V" shaped leg set. Tie in the leg set of top of the body, immediately behind the eyeballs. Pull the stem forward until you attain the desired leg length. Secure with a couple of figure-eight thread wraps around the eyes. Clip off the remaining hackle stem.

Step 6:

Pull the CDC puff toward the rear of the hook and secure with a couple of thread wraps immediately behind the eyeballs. Advance the thread under the eyeballs, and whip finish behind the hook eye. Clip the thread and apply a small drop of cement to the head.
